March-2018 organized by Muzzafar Nagar Obstetrics and gynecology society
and Indian Society of Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy. A study published by the
ICMR Indian Council of Medical Research of newborns in India as a part of multi
site research has shown an alarming incidence 1 in 800 newborns suffer from
congenital hypothyroidism precursor to cretinism. This survey was in Chennai.
If this is picked up at birth they can get the
appropriate treatment and can have a normal life. Similarly there are other
anomalies like Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia called CAH which was 1 in 2000.
These conditions can be diagnosed at birth by newborn screening. These tests
costs approximately Rs 5000 and now a days there is a need to raise awareness
about these conditions.
